Hair Restoration

If your hair follicles have become inactive over time and you are starting to notice your hair thinning, we can help. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for hair restoration is a non-surgical treatment ideal for patients with alopecia or for those who are noticing their hair has thinned over time.

PRP treatments have long been used in other medical applications because high concentrations of platelets promote growth and stimulate healing of all kinds of tissues. PRP for hair restoration uses your own platelets to stimulate dormant hair follicles and allows for the regenerative process of hair growth to begin again.

Many people chose to pursue PRP for hair restoration because of its less invasive nature and natural approach. There is little to no downtime following the treatment and you are able to return to your daily activities following your treatments.

With Ann Yoney, APRN in Monroe, CT, hair loss is a lost memory!  With simple low-invasive procedures, you can get your beautiful locks back!

Is Hair Restoration Right For You?

The main advantages of PRP are that it is a minimally invasive procedure that is virtually painless and requires no downtime for recovery. Additionally, because PRP treatments use the patient’s own blood, there are no risks of side effects or rejection. When you choose PRP to address thinning hair and come in for your treatment, Ann will extract a small amount of your blood.

The blood is then processed through a centrifuge, separating the platelet rich plasma from the other cells in your blood sample. The PRP that is obtained is then carefully injected into the area on your scalp designated for treatment. It’s a short, virtually painless procedure done right in our office, and offers very few side effects.

Post-procedure, there are no restrictions – you can return to normal activities and even shower and wash your hair. You may notice a mild sensation of heat in the treatment area, similar to a sunburn, but this is temporary and resolves quickly. For optimal results, you may need more than one treatment session, which is something that you and Ann will discuss when formulating your individualized treatment plan.

Results aren’t immediately visible, but you will start to see a gradual change in your hair as the growth factors do their job. Within two to six months, your hair will begin to look thicker and you’ll be able to see noticeable, positive results.

Frequently Asked Questions

The day of your PRP for hair restoration treatment we will do a small blood draw. Your blood is then spun down in a centrifuge for several minutes to separate the blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma. During this time the physician will have you numb the treatment area with either ice or a topical spray to ensure that you are comfortable during the treatment. Once spun down and separated the PRP solution is administered into the scalp forming a platelet-rich fibrin matrix, or PRFM. This platelet-rich fibrin matrix contains stem cells and growth factors that are vital components for hair restoration to occur.

Many people chose to pursue PRP for hair restoration because of its less invasive nature and natural approach. There is little to no downtime following the treatment and you are able to return to your daily activities following your treatments.

You can expect to do a minimum of 3 treatments, spaced 6 – 10 weeks apart with some patients needing up to 6 treatments. Results vary and maintenance treatments will be needed depending on what your desired outcome may be.

If you are experiencing hair loss, you’re basically a good candidate for PRF hair restoration. However, the growth factors, white blood cells, stem cells, and platelets in the PRF work best when awakening dormant hair follicles. These hair follicles are still healthy and capable of growing hair, but they are spending more and more time in dormant phase. That’s why PRP hair restoration works best when the patient notices early hair loss. Clinically, this is known as androgenic alopecia.

PRP works well for both men and women, especially those in the early stages of hair loss. It also is effective for women with traction alopecia, hair thinning caused by hairstyles that pulled the hair to an extreme degree and inhibited hair growth. It is also a good procedure for people whose hair is thinning but who don’t want to resort to taking medications regularly.

The goal is two-fold. First, the hair follicles need to stop transitioning for longer periods into the dormant/resting phase of the hair growth cycle. Second, those follicles need to be given the growth factors, stem cells, and platelets to revive them and get them to return to the growth phase.

You’ll first see a marked decrease in hair thinning and shedding. Next, you’ll see real hair growth usually in the first two to three months.
